If anyone looks back through my blog you will see that I have long been a fan of the patterns from Lauren at Sew by Pattern Pieces. I was super excited to hear that she was drafting my all time favourite tee pattern in grown up sizes, after all everyone needs a perfectly fitting tee. And a perfectly fitting tee this one is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are so many things I love about the #11100 Ladies Fun Tee:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Covers a massive size range Au 6-26, US 2-22, Eu 34-54</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- It has a separately drafted front piece for each cup size A-G (more on that shortly)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Three different neck options (round, scoop and V)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Loads of sleeve options: plain sleeves in cap, short, 3/4 and long length, gathered short sleeve and princess sleeve</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Fitted or more relaxed fit cut lines</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Slightly curved hem option</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Layers for selective printing</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Is that enough? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So why the separate front pieces for each cup size? This takes all the headache out of getting the perfect fit. There are beautifully detailed instructions in the tutorial on how to measure accurately and choose the right cup size for you. The may not be the bra size you wear but trust the pattern IT WORKS!!! My other trusty tip here is measure yourself with the bra you are most likely to wear with the shirt when finished, I found that my measurements varied a lot between different bras. Once you have worked out your size you are done! No hoping that you measure a B cup as that's what the pattern is drafted for. No hoping you can get away with the fit because the fabric is stretchy and you're not that far off. No more full bust or small bust adjustments, just cut and sew!!! PERFECTION!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll admit I got slightly addicted to this pattern during testing, partly due to attention to detail taken in getting the fit just right during testing and partly because I wanted a whole wardrobe of new tees for summer ;-). So what did I make. I'm in love with the fitted version with a scoop neck, although I'm looking forward to trying the other options as well. I made a size 8 through the shoulders and bust drafted out to a 10 in the waist/hip, which is where my measurements sit on the size chart. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I couldn't help but try the gorgeous wee puffed sleeve version, I still have plans to put some heat transfer vinyl on this one but I can't make up my mind what to put on it, lol. This tee shows how the fit isn't only lovely through the front but also in the back where there's not a lot of fabric pooling at the waistline.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ky702L_H904/WDO45PVDzUI/AAAAAAAACgA/wYj8QwreA-4/s640/blogger-image--167496733.jpg" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By this stage I was ready to break out this fabulous panel that I'd been hoarding for quite some time. I now have a new favourite tee of all time :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QMYl3DjEyDk/WDO4_jsORJI/AAAAAAAACgM/qdlKTb23Nhs/s640/blogger-image--1431604064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QMYl3DjEyDk/WDO4_jsORJI/AAAAAAAACgM/qdlKTb23Nhs/s640/blogger-image--1431604064.jpg" style="cursor: move;" /></a></div>

<br />
I have been promising Mr A new togs with this lego fabric since I grabbed it in a destash over a year ago, but hey good things take time. Then along came KCW with a toy theme, and Mr A's current rash top is falling to pieces so I finally got around to it :-)<br />
For the rash top I fell back to my current favourite too pattern, the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/257924595/21100-fun-tee?ref=shop_home_active_1">Fun Tee</a> from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SewbyPatternPieces/about">Sew by Pattern Pieces</a>. This is drafted as a girls pattern but the fit is so fantastic that I simply altered it to a more 'boy fit' by straightening out the side seams to remove the waist shaping. For Mr A I made a size 5 with 7 length, his measurements were between the 5 and 6 around so I sized down as this is for a fitted rash top. The only other alteration I made was to widen the neckband, although I didn't need to lower the neckline as I thought I might. The neck band isn't sitting too well at the moment but I think that will settle down once it's been wet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oV7JJjcqL64/Vs1VypHvSgI/AAAAAAAACd4/hv4l5lSH9h0/s640/blogger-image-1432477634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oV7JJjcqL64/Vs1VypHvSgI/AAAAAAAACd4/hv4l5lSH9h0/s640/blogger-image-1432477634.jpg" /></a></div>
For the Swim shorts I wanted to add the lego fabric as a panel down the sides so I used the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleKiwisCloset">Little Kiwis Closet</a> <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/210104731/skinny-legs-leggings-12m-14yrs-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_1">Skinny Legs</a> pattern as it already has this built in as a pattern option (and I was feeling super lazy). I have also always found these to be a good fit on Miss M and I was hoping they would work here too. I fully lined the shorts (apart from the side panels) with some random leotard lining I found in stash (I assume it came from Mum at some stage). These are a size 5 cut to mid thigh length (I kind of guessed the length as I didn't want really short boy legs but didn't want them to go right down to just about the knee either).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Fos4QtS_kog/Vs1ABgBsw8I/AAAAAAAACdg/T_Wy2vdE0z4/s640/blogger-image-240329076.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Fos4QtS_kog/Vs1ABgBsw8I/AAAAAAAACdg/T_Wy2vdE0z4/s640/blogger-image-240329076.jpg" /></a></div>
And here it is all together. I'm really pleased with the fit on, and I don't think there is any chance of losing him in the crowds at the pool!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x_j1cACtweE/Vs0_-urkLxI/AAAAAAAACdc/3mDhZT0qjmA/s640/blogger-image--1705347439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x_j1cACtweE/Vs0_-urkLxI/AAAAAAAACdc/3mDhZT0qjmA/s640/blogger-image--1705347439.jpg" /></a></div>
The swimming cap I blogged about <a href="http://kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2016/02/fo-stinger-bodysuit-by-sew-by-pattern.html">here</a>, it's a fab free pattern from Sew by Pattern Pieces. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

There are so many things to love about this pattern but I think my favourite of all is the clean stylish lines and amazing fit. <br />
The pattern is available in sizes 2y-14y for girls (<a href="http://www.sewstraightandgather.com/product/girls-legends-top-dress/">here</a>) and 02-20 for women (<a href="http://www.sewstraightandgather.com/product/ladies-legends-top-dress/">here</a>), or you can buy a pattern bundle of both. I tested the womens version in a size 2 drafted to a 4 int eh waist and 6 in the hip. This brings me to my first point, because of the clean simple lines of this pattern adjusting to get the perfect fit and silhouette is super easy. The pattern is drafted for the industry standard B-cup but instructions/links are given in the tutorial for doing a FBA if needed. The pattern includes sleeveless, short and long sleeved options and can also be made as a dress with the skirt starting at the hip or waist. I made the top (view A) with short sleeves and I'm thrilled with the result.<br />
All this sounds great right but there is one more secret in this pattern, the front/collar piece is lined and the construction is ingenious leaving all the internal seams fully enclosed. This makes for such a tidy finish which I love in handmade clothes. <br />
I made my version in a grey/white poly/nylon/spandex stripe and lined the front with a white cotton lycra. This top was made from an early version of the pattern and the collar has since been adjusted slightly to sit more smoothly round the back of the neck. (Please excuse the slightly horrid photos).<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I really do love this pattern. I have since bought the girls pattern as it was just what I was after to complete an outfit I have in mind for Miss M, and I also have some lovely grape merino set aside to make a long sleeved top version for myself. </div>

Introducing the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/267770963/new-24200-stinger-bodysuit?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=Stinger%20Bodysuit&ref=sr_gallery_1">Stinger Bodysuit</a>, a fabulous swimsuit with zip front, three sleeve lengths and optional skirt, and comes in sizes 1-14y. As always with Lauren's patterns the tutorial is very clear to follow and there is a lot of information about fabric choice and loads of helpful tips for getting a professional finish. The thought of sewing a zip into lycra would send lots of people running for the hills but don't. The technique used in this pattern makes it easy and there is a fabulous video tutorial for those who find visual instructions easier. I love that there is a tab at the bottom of the zip for a nice finish, and a zipper guard to stop the zip rubbing, especially once the suit gets wet. <br />
Down here in New Zealand while we are lucky to have lots of beaches and pretty good weather, we are also blighted by sitting right under a huge ozone hole meaning sun safety is a huge issue here. My two wee monkeys are also blessed with fair skin, especially Miss M, who to add to that has decided wearing a tee over her togs at the beach is a no-go. In comes the Stinger bodysuit, instant cover-up, no more risk of burnt shoulders and she loves it - woohoo. I decided against making the skirted option this time around but it is super cute and I'm sure I'll be adding one to her wardrobe before long.<br />
For Miss M I made the long sleeved version in size 4 with 6 length. She adores it and couldn't wait to try it out on our next beach trip. Disclaimer: I got her to take her sunhat off for the photos ;-)<br />

<br />
But wait there's more. Along with the Stinger Bodysuit comes the Jellyfish Swim Cap, again in multi sizes, fully tested and the best part of all is it's FREE. This is the best stash buster for knit scraps ever, there is no easier way to find your child in a crowded pool than for them to have a swim cap that stands out from the crowd. This is a super fast sew, as in I made one while cooking dinner, and the kids love them. Miss M had to have one to match her new swimsuit :-)<br />

And of course Mr A was not to be left out. I dug out some lego fabric and he is in love with his new cap and won't stop wearing it. He was also super excited to have people comment on it at his swimming lessons :-)<br />

Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07546718077022583793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411127843759733995.post-35323008094234749132015-11-26T22:01:00.002+13:002015-11-26T22:01:10.687+13:00FO: Skip Skirt from Sew by Pattern PiecesA while ago I reviewed the Fun Tee, the first pattern released by Lauren of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/shop/SewbyPatternPieces?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Sew By Pattern Pieces</a>. Anyone who has read that review will know that I kind of went a little fan girl over it. Of course I jumped at the chance of working with Lauren again in testing her newly released <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/257915595/22101-skip-skirt-and-leggings?ref=shop_home_active_2">Skip Skirt</a> (and just quietly I'm still a little fan girl). Once again Lauren's knowledge of the industry shines through in another fabulous pattern.<br />
So the vital statistics of the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/257915595/22101-skip-skirt-and-leggings?ref=shop_home_active_2">Skip Skirt</a>? The pattern covers sizes 1-12y. There are seven (yes 7) different views all of which sit on a nice yoke and include both gathered and non-gathered option, single or double tiers, and two different pocket options. Not only that but the Skip Skirt also includes a leggings pattern as well, yes that's right another whole pattern is included. The leggings come in 3 lengths and can be made either be attached to the skirt or separate. And as if that's not enough, but wait there's more! Yes that's right there's more, no you don't also receive a free set of steak knives but if you also buy the fabulous <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/257924595/21100-fun-tee-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_6">Fun Tee</a> pattern (which you NEED anyway), then the skirt pattern is designed to fit seamlessly onto the tee to make a dress (with any of the 7 views of skirt). I've now well and truely lost count of all the possible combinations so let's just call this a full capsule wardrobe right there ;-).<br />
The pattern comes with a full and comprehensive tutorial with clear illustrations for making all the possible options. Not only does it have a comprehensive body measurements table but also a complete table of finished garment measurements so you can get a finished article which is exactly what you are after in terms of fit. Alongside all this is a section on fabric selection and preparation, and more tips on getting a fabulous finish with knit fabrics than you can shake a stick at. The pattern itself comes with layers option for printing and also a list of which pages are required for which of the pattern options. What more could you ask for.<br />
<br />
So what did I actually make. First up is the single tier gathered skirt with attached knee length leggings. The pattern includes instructions for a separate waistband for use when attaching leggings, or a fold down elastic waist. The fluoro floral cotton lycra I used for the skirt DD found hidden away in my stash and begged me to make her something in it. Although it is a cotton lycra, the skirt is also suitable for stable knits. The leggings in this case are pin striped cotton/nylon, and a 4-way stretch is required for the leggings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4f6x8iis7U8/Vlarcj36ZSI/AAAAAAAACac/9bc79jE2Xi4/s640/blogger-image--1172014024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4f6x8iis7U8/Vlarcj36ZSI/AAAAAAAACac/9bc79jE2Xi4/s640/blogger-image--1172014024.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JOZvlhRZ8Ws/VlarhQDK-DI/AAAAAAAACas/3kP8Xsbugkg/s640/blogger-image-431289007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JOZvlhRZ8Ws/VlarhQDK-DI/AAAAAAAACas/3kP8Xsbugkg/s640/blogger-image-431289007.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fbJh_tPHBY8/VlarRCqwWYI/AAAAAAAACaA/Sedhb35BUy4/s640/blogger-image--20188568.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fbJh_tPHBY8/VlarRCqwWYI/AAAAAAAACaA/Sedhb35BUy4/s640/blogger-image--20188568.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zrhxmb8LWdo/VlarViaJCvI/AAAAAAAACaM/T8K4XDq28aY/s640/blogger-image--1658609204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zrhxmb8LWdo/VlarViaJCvI/AAAAAAAACaM/T8K4XDq28aY/s640/blogger-image--1658609204.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It was just a touch cold and windy when I took these so excuse the half frozen looking DD. I should just make a quick note here on the fit on the leggings, these have been adjusted to the perfect fit and I love them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-muckBp8bqw4/VlaraFMKfDI/AAAAAAAACaU/9UonwomQ8iQ/s640/blogger-image-489418243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-muckBp8bqw4/VlaraFMKfDI/AAAAAAAACaU/9UonwomQ8iQ/s640/blogger-image-489418243.jpg" /></a></div>
This is DD's favourite skirt and she wears it all the time to school so the pattern is totally kid approved!<br />
<div>
<br />
Next up on the cutting table was the unfathered version with patch pockets. The pockets have a lovely gathered opening which is bound to give a gorgeous finish. In this case I used a blue leggings style knit and finished the patch pockets with a honeycomb stitch in pink and the elastic waist and hem with pink twin needle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hUPKF8K2rZU/VlarXwlZZfI/AAAAAAAACaQ/G3zQrIh0Cj8/s640/blogger-image--239737095.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hUPKF8K2rZU/VlarXwlZZfI/AAAAAAAACaQ/G3zQrIh0Cj8/s640/blogger-image--239737095.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3P4bSBoipJo/Vlarex1RbzI/AAAAAAAACao/V1Oc2ebyv4A/s640/blogger-image-1253870572.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3P4bSBoipJo/Vlarex1RbzI/AAAAAAAACao/V1Oc2ebyv4A/s640/blogger-image-1253870572.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0CMQtcXtAJY/VlarMsh5izI/AAAAAAAACZw/v3hIW84qoBw/s640/blogger-image--840435528.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0CMQtcXtAJY/VlarMsh5izI/AAAAAAAACZw/v3hIW84qoBw/s640/blogger-image--840435528.jpg" /></a></div>
To be honest I'm not sure which of these skirts is my favourite, they are both so cute on and the yoke sits so nicely on the hip. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tjoflXnU0CU/VlarOqARLxI/AAAAAAAACZ4/Sg7x0TrTIIs/s640/blogger-image-1844690127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tjoflXnU0CU/VlarOqARLxI/AAAAAAAACZ4/Sg7x0TrTIIs/s640/blogger-image-1844690127.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WGn_PTMxc2w/VlarTPcEfRI/AAAAAAAACaI/1JbB6PT_NTw/s640/blogger-image--465042423.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WGn_PTMxc2w/VlarTPcEfRI/AAAAAAAACaI/1JbB6PT_NTw/s640/blogger-image--465042423.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And what is that super cute tee that I have teamed with both these skirts? Why it's one of the many versions of the Fun Tee of course (told you that you needed that pattern too, and there's a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/257924183/both-21100-fun-tee-and-22101-skip-skirt?ref=shop_home_active_1">bundle</a> deal).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I really can't wait to have the chance to make up the dress version of the tee/skirt combo (just a couple of costumes to make before a school disco next week first). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Finally once you have rushed off and bought the pattern then go and join the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/SBPPsewingcircle/?ref=br_tf">Sew by Pattern Pieces Sewing Circle</a> group on Facebook (PS there may be a great Black Friday coupon code there) and share all your fabulous creations :-) </div>

I feel equal parts excited and terrified at being part of the very first Japanese Sewing Week. If you don't know what Japanese Sewing Week is all about check out this <a href="http://made-by-sara.blogspot.pt/2015/11/1st-japanese-sewing-week-get-ready.html">post</a> by Sara of Made By Sara, that not only explains it all but even tells you how to join the link party if you get inspired to start sewing. There is also an amazing giveaway alongside this week long celebration, this can be found at the end of the post (see how I did that, you have to at least scroll through the hole post to get to it, lol).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, Japanese Sewing patterns. I first fell in love with them several years ago when I bought a book second hand and then had to wait patiently for Miss M to get big enough to fit any of the patterns. My collection has since expanded, but I am embarrassed to say that this is the first time I have found the time to actually sew from them. This was partly due to sizing, partly due to time and partly due to be slightly terrified that my books were all in japanese. I've sewn from french and german patterns before so how hard could it be right? Actually not bad at all, I find the illustrations are excellent and with a bit of background sewing knowledge it's enough to get by. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What did I choose to make? We are heading into summer (supposedly) down here in NZ so I wanted to make something that Miss M would use throughout the summer months. I love the clean lines and timeless styles of the japanese patterns, we aren't overly into layers of frills and bows here, so it suits me just fine:-) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First up I chose some gorgeous shorts, with just enough frill to make them fun without being 'frilly'. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DqrSp9wnf7k/Vk2SZiLuCRI/AAAAAAAACYs/OnX5oiC1UpQ/s640/blogger-image--1115355594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DqrSp9wnf7k/Vk2SZiLuCRI/AAAAAAAACYs/OnX5oiC1UpQ/s400/blogger-image--1115355594.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--dsY2D6kWV0/Vk2SHBvHJ0I/AAAAAAAACYA/k8oqtt58ORs/s640/blogger-image--2131794297.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--dsY2D6kWV0/Vk2SHBvHJ0I/AAAAAAAACYA/k8oqtt58ORs/s400/blogger-image--2131794297.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am so thrilled with how these came together, a lovely simple sew and once I had worked out what the kanji symbols for back and front were we were all go. I'm used to adding seam allowances so that wasn't an issue for me and they are clearly marked on the pattern illustrations. I made these from a mystery light-mid weight denim that I found lurking in my stash. It is lovely and soft and gives these a nice shape on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UW-JgWEkSBA/Vk2R5R2Cm1I/AAAAAAAACXU/0kMEYXzYQ1A/s640/blogger-image--1542651400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UW-JgWEkSBA/Vk2R5R2Cm1I/AAAAAAAACXU/0kMEYXzYQ1A/s400/blogger-image--1542651400.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was at this time that I learned that Tuttle was sponsoring this event and realised I didn't own any of their amazing pattern books. My fabulous library came to the rescue and I will be adding this book to my christmas list, it's got many lovely designs in it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DqQbvSKbHHI/Vk2SJEk6-jI/AAAAAAAACYI/gTj1LyDtF9s/s640/blogger-image--998939094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DqQbvSKbHHI/Vk2SJEk6-jI/AAAAAAAACYI/gTj1LyDtF9s/s400/blogger-image--998939094.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I chose the stand up collar shirt, and decided to make this without the contrast for the collar and cuffs, and used a pretty vintage floral cotton that was hiding in my stash, I'm pretty sure this was gifted to me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5grASn5dXuQ/Vk2R-De6tPI/AAAAAAAACXg/sZsB5PBCrF4/s640/blogger-image-638523165.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5grASn5dXuQ/Vk2R-De6tPI/AAAAAAAACXg/sZsB5PBCrF4/s400/blogger-image-638523165.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One thing I have noticed from the books I own is that the size measurements do vary slightly between authors. Using the measurement tables in the books I made the size 110 for the shorts (with slightly shorter elastic) and the size 100 with 110 length for the shirt (I usually make a size 4 width with 5 length for Miss M). The fit was perfect and I have fallen in love with this outfit, it's so sweet and girly without being over the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In the middle of winter Mr A declared that he didn't have a scarf. After pointing out the scarf that was in his school bag he told me it was itchy (to be fair it wasn't the greatest). It was freezing and he walks to school most days no matter the weather so I got him to go 'shopping' in my yarn stash. He chose some gorgeous Vintage Purls green sock yarn. Now while I love VP yarn I HATE knitting scarves and the thought of knitting one in 4 ply nearly led me to distraction. I did manage to talk him out of the plain rib scarf though and he chose the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/railyard-scarf">Railyard Scarf by Mary Keenan</a>.<br />

I must admit I was pleased with it once it was all blocked out and the boy was happy :-) I reckon I earn lots of brownie points for actually knitting him a scarf though.<br />

I did just realise though that I never shared this jersey that I recently finished for Mr A. <br />
The poor child chose this pattern 2 years ago, he even came with me to the yarn shop and chose the colours for it. I finally got around to knitting it this year. Of course that meant he had grown half a mile and I no longer had enough yarn but thankfully a quick international yarn order saved the day - phew.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-480tIsQijY8/VkkHpm1m8CI/AAAAAAAACV8/yPgervulyjE/s640/blogger-image--1389239988.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-480tIsQijY8/VkkHpm1m8CI/AAAAAAAACV8/yPgervulyjE/s640/blogger-image--1389239988.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The pattern is from a Phildar pattern magazine (Pitchoun Autumn/winter 2010) and it is design Pull #39-T10-052. Because Mr A is tall and slim I made the size 4 with 8 length and mashed the sizes a bit around the armholes and sleeve caps, thankfully it all worked out in the end. The yarn is Cascade 220 sport and I'm really thrilled with how it has knitted up so nicely. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QmuJ95ccnQ8/VkkHk5TE2xI/AAAAAAAACVs/i11qTCTqtIU/s640/blogger-image-435632810.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QmuJ95ccnQ8/VkkHk5TE2xI/AAAAAAAACVs/i11qTCTqtIU/s640/blogger-image-435632810.jpg" /></a></div>
It's a while since I've done anything with colourwork so that was fun and surprisingly I didn't dislike doing the seaming as much as I thought I would (it has been ages since I last knitted something that needed seaming). <br />
<br />

The fit is lovely on him now so I just have to hope he doesn't grow too much before next winter! The main thing is he loves it :-)<br />

<br />Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07546718077022583793noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411127843759733995.post-11713218470527676602015-11-10T16:36:00.000+13:002015-11-10T16:39:22.395+13:00FO: Star Anise by Gracious ThreadsI was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to test the new pattern release for Jess of <a href="http://www.graciousthreads.ca/">Gracious Threads</a>. I love so many of her designs and recently reviewed her Eclair Blouse. But anyway the <a href="http://www.graciousthreads.ca/product/star-anise-dress-pdf-pattern/">Star Anise Dress</a> is gorgeous. I love the simple clean lines and the slightly vintage look of this dress. It is stylish but practical and I feel works well for both younger girls and tweens (it comes in sizes 2-12y).<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
As usual I made a mix of sizes for Miss M, with size 3 width and 5 length throughout. This proved spot on for fit, with the waistband falling perfectly on the natural waist and skirt length spot on with no adjustments required. There are many features of this dress that I love, the way the darts in the bodice and pleats in the skirt match with seams through the waistband for a continuous line is lovely and everything matched up perfectly first time. The added detail of the fold back cuffs on the sleeves is also super cute. In testing I did have a few issues with the cuffs being tight but that issue has been addressed and I feel was more of a problem for me due to mixing sizes in the way I did. Next time I will check the measurements of the cuffs before cutting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The fabric I chose for our version is a vintage lightweight (almost sheer) cotton with an embroidered border. I'm pretty sure my Mum bought this many years ago to make a dress for me, which makes this very special. Due to the lightweight nature of the fabric I cut an entire second dress from white cotton and treated the two pieces as one throughout so none of the darts or pleats showed through. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So here it is :-)</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I must admit that I do love testing patterns but I am often a little hesitant to test for a new designer, I guess mainly because you never know what you are getting yourself in for in terms of both the pattern itself and the testing process. So when I applied to test this tee shirt pattern I really wasn't too bothered if I got chosen or not. Well now I am soooooo glad I was and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to review this pattern. While I received a free copy of the final pattern all the opinions within this review are my own and I receive nothing for writing this post ;-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So let me introduce you to the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/248642609/21100-fun-tee?ref=shop_home_active_1">Fun Tee</a> from<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SewbyPatternPieces/about"> Sew By Pattern Pieces</a>. First of all it is so nice to have a new designer on the block who has a really strong (as in 20 years strong) background in the industry, and this shines through in every aspect of this pattern. How many tee shirt patterns are there out there? Loads. How many girls tee patterns do you need? Just this one really! The Fun Tee covers sizes 1-12y and has 4 different sleeve options, short and long plain sleeves, short puffed sleeve and the simply gorgeous princess sleeve.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok so what sets this pattern apart, firstly the detail that went into the testing process, attention to fit was amazing and the thoughts of testers were carefully considered and acted upon, woohoo! I have yet to make any tee that fits my DD as well as this one around the sleeve and across the shoulder (look I even took pictures to prove it!), to be honest I don't think I realised other tees didn't fit well until I made this one. (and look at how nicely that neckband sits!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8KPOf-9lFWY/Vgz3Pyu1hTI/AAAAAAAACT0/82ODKHng1Eo/s640/blogger-image--1263059592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8KPOf-9lFWY/Vgz3Pyu1hTI/AAAAAAAACT0/82ODKHng1Eo/s640/blogger-image--1263059592.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vM7FVUxSWJs/Vgz3SDfYSaI/AAAAAAAACT8/kY00nHV_LxU/s640/blogger-image--1731542299.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vM7FVUxSWJs/Vgz3SDfYSaI/AAAAAAAACT8/kY00nHV_LxU/s640/blogger-image--1731542299.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When you buy this pattern you get so much more than just a pattern and tutorial, you get all of the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Full measurement charts for both body measurements AND finished garment measurements, this means that not only can you work out what size you should make but also decide if you want to size up for a more relaxed fit.</li>
<li>Detailed information on how to adjust the perfect fit you desire (including clear line drawings on how to do this properly via two different techniques)</li>
<li>Extensive tips for sewing with knit fabrics which are worth reading through even if you have been sewing with knits for years.</li>
<li>Information on how to calculate the stretch of your knit before you start, and then consequently what adjustments you may need to make to get the fit you want from the pattern. This is something that was discussed a lot during testing and ALL that information is there for you.</li>
<li>Plus of course a full and clear tutorial for all versions of the top with simple to follow line diagrams, including instructions for printing your pattern and layers feature for those who prefer to use it.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So onto some of the results. I made two tops for DD, and from the size chart she is a size 3 with 5 length. This first I really used as a muslin for size, and it's made from remnant of stable knit I had in my drawer for years (it probably came from Mum).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JUg6QteXxZ0/Vgz3UMThsoI/AAAAAAAACUE/g--U_OtFigY/s640/blogger-image--1558857038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JUg6QteXxZ0/Vgz3UMThsoI/AAAAAAAACUE/g--U_OtFigY/s640/blogger-image--1558857038.jpg" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9AfVVvyNWxw/Vgz3DWvaY0I/AAAAAAAACTU/2xfbUh301f0/s640/blogger-image-1239836401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9AfVVvyNWxw/Vgz3DWvaY0I/AAAAAAAACTU/2xfbUh301f0/s640/blogger-image-1239836401.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As you can see with fit was spot on, there is even a nice amount of length there for this child who is growing like a weed right now, and this plain long sleeved version makes not only a great basic tee but a fabulous winter pj top too :-) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KddUrbGs8VM/Vgz3FpvbWlI/AAAAAAAACTc/w_ZACnlJYyM/s640/blogger-image-1694426457.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KddUrbGs8VM/Vgz3FpvbWlI/AAAAAAAACTc/w_ZACnlJYyM/s640/blogger-image-1694426457.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SaRmEu6EWgk/Vgz3LePSNDI/AAAAAAAACTk/rS-B-ETmTpk/s640/blogger-image--720380766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SaRmEu6EWgk/Vgz3LePSNDI/AAAAAAAACTk/rS-B-ETmTpk/s640/blogger-image--720380766.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The second version I made I used a cotton/lycra fabric throughout with 50% stretch. For this one I chose to do the princess sleeve and the only other alteration I made was to cut the size 2 neckband instead of the size 3 so that it sits nicely. This is DD's absolute favourite top right now, she absolutely loves it and who couldn't love that sleeve. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Over the years I have lost count of how many different tee shirt patterns I have tried out, everything from various pdf's, older paper patterns, magazines, the lot. I am thrilled to say that this one will replace all of those for a simple girls tee pattern for many years to come. I don't often make patterns more than a couple of times but this will be one of the exceptions to that rule. I am so pleased that I discovered Lauren's patterns now and I look forward to seeing what she will come out with in the future. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Finally if you join Lauren's facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/SBPPsewingcircle/">group</a>, she will soon be releasing a free flutter sleeve add on for the long sleeved version of this pattern. So go <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/248642609/21100-fun-tee?ref=shop_home_active_1">pattern shopping</a> and start sewing :-)</div>

I have been crafting a bit and will catch up on a few things over the next few weeks but for now I want to share with you all this fabulous new pattern release from Jess at <a href="http://www.graciousthreads.ca/">Gracious Threads</a>. I fell in love with this lovely summer top when I saw the pics, so nice to see something with a point of difference and I love the exposed zipper. <br />
<div>
The <a href="http://wp.me/p51dKe-pe">Eclair Blouse</a> is a woven summer top with exposed zip and bias facing at neck, armholes and hem. It is fitted through the waist and has cute side vents at the hem which allow for easy movement even with the slightly longer length.</div>
<div>
I let Miss M choose the fabric and I think it came out really cute.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z6gXfibcWQE/VgzUUStcfRI/AAAAAAAACSk/NZ-yCAiLnaw/s640/blogger-image-1629718819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z6gXfibcWQE/VgzUUStcfRI/AAAAAAAACSk/NZ-yCAiLnaw/s640/blogger-image-1629718819.jpg" /></a></div>
The exposed zip and bias facings make this a pattern recommended as intermediate but I found the notes in the pattern very clear to follow and there is a link to a video to help with the zip. I love that the zip has a zip guard as well to stop making any contact with the skin.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sSjYgUTuu3w/VgzUNL4FMpI/AAAAAAAACSM/Ou4DTuuDF-0/s640/blogger-image--132107704.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sSjYgUTuu3w/VgzUNL4FMpI/AAAAAAAACSM/Ou4DTuuDF-0/s400/blogger-image--132107704.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
For Miss M, I made the size 3 with 5 length and the fit is spot on! Fitted but not tight, and she loves it. I love the modest length over leggings and the curved hem, total cuteness.<br />

<br />
I am always a fan of the patterns from LittleKiwisCloset and this latest release is no exception. So what is the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/227600334/bow-back-beauty-topdress-pdf-pattern-and?ref=shop_home_feat_4">Bow Back Beauty</a>? Well really a better question is probably what isn't it! This gorgeous pattern is a tee/peplum/dress and even onesie all in one pattern. It covered sizes nb-12y and is even suitable for boys if you omit the bow from the back. The other options include the following.<br />
Sleeve options:<br />
~ Sleeveless with binding<br />
~ Short sleeves<br />
~ Short sleeves with cuffs<br />
~ Long sleeves<br />
Skirt options:<br />
~ Peplum<br />
~ Dress<br />
~ Hi-lo<br />
~ Double peplum<br />
~ Skirt + peplum<br />
Bodice:<br />
~ Natural waist length<br />
~ Hip length<br />
~ Onesie (nb-4 only)<br />
Back:<br />
~ Plain back<br />
~ Bow back<br />
<br />
So how do you choose just one option from all of that? Well I decided to check out my list of what was needed in Miss M's wardrobe and go from there. As we are going into winter I chose the long sleeve option and decided to make a tee over a dress as that is what she needed. Also due to the cold weather we are expecting I decided to morph the plain back with the bow back to omit the open back but retain the bow :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FyMqMzjHFoc/VUKqRpBglBI/AAAAAAAACQc/r4LotGDYius/s1600/bbbtour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FyMqMzjHFoc/VUKqRpBglBI/AAAAAAAACQc/r4LotGDYius/s1600/bbbtour.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Since it had been a while since I had made anything for Miss M I did a quick measure and chose to make her the size 2 with size 4 length and to cut the bodice hip length. I let Miss M choose from a selection of fabrics and I must say she was thrilled with the result (and so am I). I used a cotton/lycra 4-way stretch for both the tee and the bow, and the same white cotton lycra for all the bindings. I found the printing, taping and tracing of this pattern all went very smoothly and the tutorial was easy to follow. I really like the finish given of the binding technique used in the pattern. It's not the induing technique I usually choose as it gives a slightly more bulky finish, but it was perfect for this particular top. <br />
Because I wanted to morph the plain back with the bow back this meant that I ended up with 2 bound edges together at the front of the envelope neck, as this was bulky I offset them slightly with the bow piece in front and used the shoulder mark of the bow piece to match the backs/front before adding the sleeves.<br />
Construction was very straight forward and I was surprised at how quickly this wee top went together considering the details that are included. Really once you have bound all the neck/bow edges you are pretty much done. The only other change I made from the pattern tutorial was that I sewed the sleeve/side seams before I hemmed the sleeves (this is purely personal preference). Also I tried the tee on before hemming the sleeves and decided they were too long so I cut approx 4cm off before hemming. I was surprised about this as I've never had to shorten sleeves for Miss M before, and it turns out I shouldn't have this time. They have turned out a little on the short side now - gah! I still love it and they look cute but next time I will leave it alone! Other than that the fit is spot on. It is nice and slim through the body and I think I may even size up through the body next time I make a tee, but I wouldn't if I was doing the open back version as I'm pretty sure adding any extra width would result in gaping of the lower back portion. <br />
So here is our end result.<br />

I love so many of her patterns and this one is no exception. Otium is a sweet wee top with lots of options. It has the choice of three sleeve lengths and can be made as a plain top, with a large diagonal cross front feature pocket or with a scoop back and bow feature. This comes in both <a href="http://www.sofilantjes.com/?affiliates=10">girl's (12m to 14y)</a> and <a href="http://www.sofilantjes.com/?affiliates=10">women's sizes (XS to XXXL)</a> and they can also be bought as a <a href="http://www.sofilantjes.com/?affiliates=10">bundle </a>:-) <br />
I made the plain short sleeved tee for Miss M in a size 2 with 4 length. I'm hoping Miss M will get a lot of wear out of this if summer ever decides to arrive because it really is a sweet wee top. It has a lovely relaxed fit but with shaping through the body in the larger sizes it doesn't end up looking big and boxy - woohoo. And with a neckband and hem band it is a super fast sew. I broke out the twin needle to hem the sleeves and then decided I'd use that to topstitch the neckline too and I'm really pleased with the result. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PM-7Nb70WT0/VIvzGK1uj7I/AAAAAAAACOQ/tg_VMwga3NQ/s1600/DSCF0978.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PM-7Nb70WT0/VIvzGK1uj7I/AAAAAAAACOQ/tg_VMwga3NQ/s1600/DSCF0978.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
And here it is on Miss M, she does love it but was just tired and not really in the mood for modelling even with bribery :-) The fabric is some I got in a massive destash a couple of years ago, it's a cotton jersey and I used cotton lycra for the bands.<br />

As we head rapidly towards christmas and the end of the year here in NZ we are also heading towards the end of the school year which means teacher gift time. This year Mr A has been learning piano from a lovely young lady and I wanted to make a wee something to say thanks and Merry Christmas. As a result I've come up with this paper treble clef christmas decoration.</div>

1. Cut a 1.5cm strip down the length of a 12"x12" square of scrapbooking card. In this case I have some I had left over from craft projects last year that is patterned on one side and white on the other. I used a guillotine for this step but you could easily use a rotary cutter or scissors.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Using the template as a guide make small marks down the sides of the strip of card at the distances shown from the top, you don't need to label these as shown in the template but the labels will be referred to later :-) Be sure to mark the top three positions on the ride hand side of the card and the bottom three on the left hand side as shown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pFgnqSdsJhM/VIarNvaNqwI/AAAAAAAACMY/4i0fTnEzWEI/s1600/DSCF0990.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pFgnqSdsJhM/VIarNvaNqwI/AAAAAAAACMY/4i0fTnEzWEI/s1600/DSCF0990.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wHX7u8kvPPQ/VIZEU2mB18I/AAAAAAAACL0/VQ2Wli5HZb8/s1600/trebleclef.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wHX7u8kvPPQ/VIZEU2mB18I/AAAAAAAACL0/VQ2Wli5HZb8/s1600/trebleclef.jpg" height="640" width="172" /></a></div>
4. Now make a small cut at each of the marked positions from the marked edge to just past the centre of the card as shown.<br />
5. Fold the card (white or wrong side up) so that the C and D positions match up and slot the two cuts together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vz3XIgfKfmI/VIardl7BsuI/AAAAAAAACMo/PMSj_itiP1c/s1600/DSCF0994.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vz3XIgfKfmI/VIardl7BsuI/AAAAAAAACMo/PMSj_itiP1c/s1600/DSCF0994.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
6. Now fold position B round to slot into the cut at position F.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MM0MZZxMhqM/VIarmiZ1DnI/AAAAAAAACM4/U1XPVwj3wok/s1600/DSCF0995.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MM0MZZxMhqM/VIarmiZ1DnI/AAAAAAAACM4/U1XPVwj3wok/s1600/DSCF0995.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
7. Next match up position A to position E in the same manner. At this point you can put a slight curve into the inner end of the card to continue the curve if you want to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QAzHTBOk77U/VIarc_dd5fI/AAAAAAAACMk/H9y0877Wv5c/s1600/DSCF0997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QAzHTBOk77U/VIarc_dd5fI/AAAAAAAACMk/H9y0877Wv5c/s1600/DSCF0997.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
8. Take the straight end of card and curl it around a pen to give a curved tail. And you are done!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vHT4hCipCcA/VIaro2AyjeI/AAAAAAAACNA/KOnLMzLe5Ik/s1600/DSCF0998.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vHT4hCipCcA/VIaro2AyjeI/AAAAAAAACNA/KOnLMzLe5Ik/s1600/DSCF0998.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a needle to thread a hanging loop through the top of mine so that it could be used as a tree decoration. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g045wZNhe9I/VIKurrrXjZI/AAAAAAAACKw/amzSe-vuino/s1600/Lil%2BLuxe%2B2014%2BHoliday%2Bblog%2BTour%2BBanner.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g045wZNhe9I/VIKurrrXjZI/AAAAAAAACKw/amzSe-vuino/s1600/Lil%2BLuxe%2B2014%2BHoliday%2Bblog%2BTour%2BBanner.jpeg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
First up there are 2 things to note, I received a copy of this pattern in order to write this review but the comments here are entirely my own, secondly while this wasn't my first choice of pattern I am actually thrilled I tried it and in all kinds of love with this dress.<br />
The Modern Belle dress has very sweet simple lines and just enough features to make it extra special but very wearable. Here in New Zealand we have Christmas in the middle of summer (although noone has told our weather that yet) and most people don't go all out with special christmas themed outfits. Because I wanted to make a dress that was able to be used throughout summer not just over the holiday period, but still had a holiday feel, I chose some lovely green whimsical fairy fabric and paired it with red/white spots. :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fKtHocWoDkU/VIJ0FOqEXnI/AAAAAAAACJ8/Fn3m_uIODSs/s1600/modernbelle2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fKtHocWoDkU/VIJ0FOqEXnI/AAAAAAAACJ8/Fn3m_uIODSs/s1600/modernbelle2a.jpg" height="640" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
So the pattern? This went together really easily from pattern piecing, to cutting and sewing. I was very impressed with the tutorial which covered everything thoroughly. I love the detail of the lined bodice and the gathered side panels hang so nicely in this quilting weight cotton. There are two options for the side panels (one being more full than the other) and I chose the less gathered version simply because I was running short of the spot fabric. The dress still has a nice wee twirl though and it got approval from the small girl child.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6lRdpVf0zUI/VIJz4sEIl0I/AAAAAAAACJU/vrcMZTb1W4k/s1600/modernbelle1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6lRdpVf0zUI/VIJz4sEIl0I/AAAAAAAACJU/vrcMZTb1W4k/s1600/modernbelle1.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
It just so happened that as this photo shoot was needed we were also invited to meet Miss M's daycare class in the city and visit a local christmas shop and window display, so I took the opportunity to get pics at the same time. It wasn't the best weather but she was a real trooper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm really pleased with how I managed to fussy cut the fairies onto the sleeves :-)</div>

It's the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tallulah-6">Tallulah</a> by <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/designers/sarah-ronchetti">Sezza Knits</a> and it's a fab wee pattern. <br />
A while ago Miss M asked for a light blue cardy and not long after the tester call came out for this pattern. After a friend very generously offered to dye some yarn for me (as I couldn't find any I liked) I knew I was going to love the result.<br />
Tallulah is a fabulous wee cropped cardy perfect for over summer dresses. It is knit in DK weight yarn and can be made with short or long sleeves. I love the touch of feminine lace on the sleeves and the long fitted ribbed section through the body (in fact mine isn't quite as long as it should be due to knitting while watching tele and not paying attention, oops). The cardy is knitted top down and in the round with the sleeves worked via the contiguous method to give a set in sleeve rather than a raglan construction. I've done this a few times now and I love the result. This pattern covers sizes nb to 10y and I made a straight size 3 for Miss M and it only took 150g (approx 300m) of yarn, so it's also really economical. :-) I also let her choose the buttons and love how happy the wee rainbow love hearts are. <br />

See it's sweet isn't it? A perfect wee cardy for any wee girl :-)Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07546718077022583793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411127843759733995.post-87086698913324960842014-12-04T16:43:00.001+13:002014-12-04T17:41:08.676+13:00FO: Seena TopsThis is a long overdue post that I keep forgetting to write, but the pattern is well worth the wait!<br />
I was very lucky to test both the kids and adult version of the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/210979397/seena-dolman-tee-bundle-package-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_9">Seena Top</a> by <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/shop/sewgraciousthreads">Gracious Threads.</a> This was offered free for a short period as part of a "New to knits" sewing challenge and it is the perfect pattern for those who are new to sewing with knit fabrics or feel intimidated by it. The pattern piecing is a breeze, the tutorial very clearly lays out each step and explains all techniques to give you a top with a great finish :-) It is now available to buy in her shop and if you follow the link above you will find the bundle listing of the kids (size 2T-8) and adult (size XXS-XXXL) patterns but they are also available separately.<br />
<br />
Cut in just 2 pieces (front and back with sleeves attached) and with bands on the bottom and sleeves the only thing that is slightly tricky for a beginner is the bound neckline (but the pictorial directions even make that super easy)<br />
So here are the versions I have made. First up a size 3 with 4 length for Miss M. This fabric drove me a bit mad as it wasn't printed straight but you can't tell once it's made up thankfully.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zLoJQrTR4Tw/VH_WFOXgKKI/AAAAAAAACIw/cIrUU-6f6oo/s1600/IMG_3806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zLoJQrTR4Tw/VH_WFOXgKKI/AAAAAAAACIw/cIrUU-6f6oo/s1600/IMG_3806.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TqoFZnrr_bI/VH_WHRXSE1I/AAAAAAAACI4/D5tkgtYEh7w/s1600/IMG_3808.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TqoFZnrr_bI/VH_WHRXSE1I/AAAAAAAACI4/D5tkgtYEh7w/s1600/IMG_3808.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
One thing that really impresses me with this pattern is that it doesn't end up wide under the arm which usually puts me off the dolman style of top. You can see here where Miss M is being a monkey striking a pose.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8FAHWeo_wPA/VH_WIYG59uI/AAAAAAAACJA/hgHJmpSjkI4/s1600/IMG_3813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8FAHWeo_wPA/VH_WIYG59uI/AAAAAAAACJA/hgHJmpSjkI4/s1600/IMG_3813.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Also apparently it works well of being a butterfly!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIoSK_kgk2U/VH_WDiTMHpI/AAAAAAAACIo/8J1_CMuACkU/s1600/DSCF0840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIoSK_kgk2U/VH_WDiTMHpI/AAAAAAAACIo/8J1_CMuACkU/s1600/DSCF0840.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I also tested the top for myself making the XXS women's size grading out to the XS as the hip. Again I found the fit great in both the tops I made. <br />
The first one is a cotton jersey with limited stretch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9muEMS4rxjM/VH_V_cbkL6I/AAAAAAAACIY/_SV5h5jmPlk/s1600/IMG_3803.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9muEMS4rxjM/VH_V_cbkL6I/AAAAAAAACIY/_SV5h5jmPlk/s1600/IMG_3803.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The second is some kind of poly knit that is very stretchy and slippery, this gives a looser fit due to the amount of stretch but I still like it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YinEspQnnW4/VH_V4wVgPKI/AAAAAAAACIQ/mDTlbbujU7M/s1600/IMG_3801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YinEspQnnW4/VH_V4wVgPKI/AAAAAAAACIQ/mDTlbbujU7M/s1600/IMG_3801.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
So if you want a fast, easy but stylish top pattern this is it! I can whip up one of these in about 20 mins start to finish. Also if you want a cheat for the binding I posted one a wee while back <a href="http://kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/10/tutorial-my-hybrid-binding-technique.html">here</a> ;-)<br />

Pattern Adjustment - Tops<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
Time for the final part of this wee blog series on fit and pattern adjustment. In <a href="http://kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/making-clothes-that-fit-2-pattern.html">part 2</a> I looked at how to adjust a leggings/trousers pattern to fit the measurements you have and in this post I'll look at adjusting a top pattern. In this post I will be using the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/213010054/peekaboopocket-mix-match-outerwear-nb?ref=shop_home_feat_4">Peekaboopocket Mix and Match Outerwear </a>pattern from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleKiwisCloset?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Little Kiwis Closet </a>as an example (and it is an amazing pattern with loads of options) but the same rules apply to any 'top' pattern whether it's a tank, tee, raglan top, shirt, hoodie, jacket or even dress.<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">1. Choosing the size</b><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">This time I am making a zip up hoodie for Mr A, who is 7yo but quite a slim build. Because I am making a top this time the main measurements (see <a href="http://kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/making-clothes-that-fit-part-1-measuring.html">part 1</a> for measuring details) that will be of interest are the chest, height and in some cases a pattern will discuss sleeve length.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Mr A's measurements are:</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Chest - 58cm</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Height - 121cm </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">which on the size chart below make him a size 5 width with 7 length :-)</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="webkit-fake-url://e24380dd-1f6c-4b30-91aa-dd9cfb759744/image.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="webkit-fake-url://e24380dd-1f6c-4b30-91aa-dd9cfb759744/image.tiff" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">2. Pattern adjustment - Front/back</b><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">I usually start with tracing the front and back pieces and the same technique is used for both. In this case I am showing it on the front piece of the jacket pattern. Often a top/shirt/dress pattern will be drawn so the bottom hem is the same for all sizes and the necklines etc are spread out. First I locate the size I am making (in this case 5) and mark around the neckline, across the shoulder and down the armhole, then I mark about half way down the centre front fold and the side seam to give this.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_yvg2j3CpYI/VHTJ9rs8bbI/AAAAAAAACGI/vaY2cyN-47k/s1600/DSCF0957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_yvg2j3CpYI/VHTJ9rs8bbI/AAAAAAAACGI/vaY2cyN-47k/s1600/DSCF0957.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IBd2c_LZ3Dk/VHTJ9wyt7iI/AAAAAAAACGM/hqCeKOX9YTI/s1600/DSCF0958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IBd2c_LZ3Dk/VHTJ9wyt7iI/AAAAAAAACGM/hqCeKOX9YTI/s1600/DSCF0958.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Now I trace over this part of the pattern and then slide the pattern up/down to the appropriate size for length (in this case the 7).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iuJan0Fy50E/VHTJ8N_JQkI/AAAAAAAACF8/3WIL09s8f_w/s1600/DSCF0959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iuJan0Fy50E/VHTJ8N_JQkI/AAAAAAAACF8/3WIL09s8f_w/s1600/DSCF0959.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The centre front and side seams should be traced down far enough join up with the original size and you can trace the bottom part of the pattern around the original size (in this case 5). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HY4bFrYflR8/VHTKUFKInOI/AAAAAAAACGk/qt5BVsGEMkk/s1600/DSCF0960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HY4bFrYflR8/VHTKUFKInOI/AAAAAAAACGk/qt5BVsGEMkk/s1600/DSCF0960.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
There you have it, you front pattern piece correctly adjusted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TnGNZSRxO8Q/VHTKPvEm4JI/AAAAAAAACGc/hv-12UP8sRA/s1600/DSCF0961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TnGNZSRxO8Q/VHTKPvEm4JI/AAAAAAAACGc/hv-12UP8sRA/s1600/DSCF0961.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Sometimes you may come across a pattern in which the neckline is nested and the bottom hem is staggered. In this case simple trace from the neckline down as described above and then extend the side seam line down to meet the new hemline (similar to that used in the pants post).</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Now use exactly the same technique to make the back pattern piece.</span></span><br />
<br />
<b style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">2. Pattern adjustment - Sleeves</b><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Before tracing the sleeves you need to keep in mind what size the armhole is that you have traced and use that size the sleeve so they will fit in nicely. In this case I will be using the size 5 sleeve as the base. This pattern has the sleeve staggered at both the top and bottom which is quite common, don't panic it's fine.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">First I mark around the size 5 sleeve and extend the line down to the size 7 length as shown below.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c89SJ3uVAJ4/VHTKO4il5YI/AAAAAAAACGU/_lhrFpJcgUk/s1600/DSCF0962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c89SJ3uVAJ4/VHTKO4il5YI/AAAAAAAACGU/_lhrFpJcgUk/s1600/DSCF0962.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Now starting at the top of the sleeve trace around the pattern but don't connect up and trace the hem.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RG8KqrGANrs/VHTKguMUXMI/AAAAAAAACGs/Ob2_qmY5mms/s1600/DSCF0963.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RG8KqrGANrs/VHTKguMUXMI/AAAAAAAACGs/Ob2_qmY5mms/s1600/DSCF0963.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Now slide the traced pattern piece up/down to the size you are using for length matching the fold line (if there is one) and the top of the sleeve arch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXuNfGb6hIg/VHTKktspPBI/AAAAAAAACG0/r4LHRZGNnII/s1600/DSCF0964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXuNfGb6hIg/VHTKktspPBI/AAAAAAAACG0/r4LHRZGNnII/s1600/DSCF0964.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally finish tracing down to the bottom of the fold and sleeve seam and across the hem - DONE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">4. Some more considerations</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">A few final things to consider, mainly any extras that might be on the pattern.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Neckband/hood - make sure you cut these to the same size that you used for the neckline or they won't fit when it comes time for construction.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Pockets - I usually cut straight to the width size but for a kangaroo pocket you may wish to adjust length accordingly if needed.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Cuffs/hemband - cut to the width size of the sleeve and body pieces respectively.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Zip length - This will be the same as the pattern indicates for the length size you have used.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Front bands (for cardigan pattern or snap front band) - cut to the size you used for length of the top.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">If you know your child is particularly long/short in the body or sleeve then you can always double check after adjusting the pattern by measuring the actual pattern pieces. The same goes with the actual fit of the top. If a tee pattern is quite loose fitting then measure the pieces as you can possibly go down a size for a slimmer fit tee if desired (or up a size for a more loose fit). Also if you wish to adjust the length of sleeve (to 3/4 or short for example) simply measure the length you want on your child then adjust the sleeve pattern as required measuring down the centre of the sleeve (fold if there is one) and remembering to add a seam allowance at the top ad hem allowance at the bottom.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">And finally remember that no matter how much careful measuring and adjusting you do the finished top will only fit like the pattern if you use the seam/hem allowances as given in the instructions. Also check that the fit of the pattern is what you are hoping to achieve in the desired product, you won't get a slim fit tee using a loose fit pattern or vice versa.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">Well that's it. Yes I have finally finished this cardigan for me that I started in March 2013. I actually started this as a test knit and it is the first and only time I have ever not met the deadline. The kids got sick, I got sick and life just got in the way. I did finish it enough to check the fit though so it wasn't a total loss. <br />
Anyway after hibernating for over a year I dragged it out and finished the first sleeve, then after another couple of months hibernation I actually got it finished. Woohoo!<br />
Wait what about the details? Ok the pattern is <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nested-2">Nested</a> by <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/designers/alicia-plummer">Alicia Plummer</a> without the colour work on the back. The yarn is the scrummiest yarn ever! It is merino/cashmere/nylon in "Derelict Daughter" and "Dreich" from <a href="http://oldmaidenaunt.com/">Old Maiden Aunt</a> in Scotland (I was so sad not to make it to her studio when we visited recently). Seriously this yarn is so light and soft, it's like being wrapped in a hug. The only downside is that it does seem to pill quite easily, but hopefully santa will bring me a sweater stone to take care of that ;-)<br />

Sorry for the terrible photos, I only had a 7yo photographer on hand. I have worn this almost constantly since I finished it and can see it being a firm favourite for ages to come. It's so light and warm to throw on when the weather can't decide whether to be spring or winter. There are some details of this pattern I absolutely love too like the trim of a contest colour along the cast off edges and the lovely shaping at the back to give a deep curve hem.<br />
<br />
So in celebration of having another 'me' knit in my wardrobe why don't you tell me what you are dying to cast on and knit for yourself? It's nearly christmas after all so comment below (including the pattern, what you love about it and your Ravelry name) and at 8pm on Sunday 30th November (NZ time) I'll draw a lucky winner to receive their pattern on Ravelry. It's that simple. Happy Knitting.Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07546718077022583793noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5411127843759733995.post-33534912846748322502014-11-26T12:10:00.003+13:002014-11-26T12:11:53.657+13:00Making Clothes That Fit: 2. Pattern Adjustment - pants<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So after <a href="http://www.kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/making-clothes-that-fit-part-1-measuring.html">Part 1 </a>we are now armed with a full set of measurements of the person we are sewing for - woohoo. Now time to choose a size and adjust the pattern if necessary. Lydia from<a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/shop/LittleKiwisCloset"> Little Kiwis Closet</a> has been kind enough to allow me to use her patterns as examples in this wee blog series (and I can thoroughly recommend purchasing any or all of them). For this post I am using the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/210104731/skinny-legs-leggings-12m-14yrs-pdf?ref=shop_home_feat_4">Skinny Legs Leggings</a> pattern which I have blogged about previously <a href="http://www.kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/fo-you-can-never-have-too-many-skinny.html">here</a>. :-)<br />
<br />
<b>1. Choosing the size</b><br />
So I am wanting to make some leggings for Miss M. Although leggings seem simple I have actually found them to be difficult to fit Miss M well. First it is important to check that we have ALL the measurements in the size chart. From my standard list I already have waist measurement but this pattern also asks for top of thigh, ankle and inseam measurements. Our measurements are:<br />
Waist = 52cm<br />
Top of thigh = 32cm<br />
Ankle = 15.5cm<br />
Inseam = 38.5cm<br />
So going to the size chart and highlighting the sizes I get the following:
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype
id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t"

<v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"/>
<v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"/>
<v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"/>
<v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"/>
<v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"/>
<v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"/>
<v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"/>
<v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"/>

o:title=""/>
</v:shape><![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-szvIk5RbB0s/VHUDmw2h7EI/AAAAAAAACHo/My6L9GnDYn4/s1600/sizechart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-szvIk5RbB0s/VHUDmw2h7EI/AAAAAAAACHo/My6L9GnDYn4/s1600/sizechart.jpg" height="284" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So even though DD is 4 and of average height I will be looking at making a size 3 with size 2 leg length (she does have a long body and short legs).</div>
<br />
<b>2. Pattern adjustment - the leg</b><br />
Now it's time to go to your pattern. <br />
In general a leggings/pants pattern that is multisize is presented so that the crotch level is the same for all sizes and they are nested from there. This makes life pretty easy. If you have a colour printer then it's even easier but I don't so I sometimes find it easier to work out which line to follow if I trace over it with a coloured marker first.<br />
So first locate the size you want at the two crotch points, then mark the pattern at each point you took a body measurement for on the pattern so I mark a size 3 for the thigh and ankle. I am only doing a size 2 leg length however so at the size 2 length I place a small line to connect the line out to the size 3 leg line.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7RDcaklPthg/VHTKyRl2wiI/AAAAAAAACHE/trB-Qp16rWA/s1600/DSCF0966.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7RDcaklPthg/VHTKyRl2wiI/AAAAAAAACHE/trB-Qp16rWA/s1600/DSCF0966.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The size 2 hem is extended out to size 3 leg line</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1ecBJvKbqAE/VHTK3N6tNEI/AAAAAAAACHM/u-gtl_lv728/s1600/DSCF0967.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1ecBJvKbqAE/VHTK3N6tNEI/AAAAAAAACHM/u-gtl_lv728/s1600/DSCF0967.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The dashed red line shows a straight size 3 with no adjustment for comparison.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now you can mark around the legs part of the pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>3. Pattern adjustment - the body</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One simple error to make when changing the sizings of pants or leggings is the length of the rise of the trousers/leggings or they wont give nice coverage. As a rule of thumb I always cut the rise length to the larger of the sizes I am doing. So if I am cutting a size 3 width with 2 leg length I will do size 3 height for the rise. However Mr A is a size 4 width with 6 length of leg and I would cut him a 6 length in rise or they will be too low. Some patterns help out here by giving you a rise length in the pattern but usually they don't.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So with that in mind I trace my size 3 line around the body section of the pants pattern. If you need to lengthen the rise to a larger size (as I do with Mr A) then extend the width line of the size you are making up to the size required (in a similar way to what I show above for the leg length alteration).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8PciqyExYOQ/VHTK65LRNJI/AAAAAAAACHU/8ptMvlNlRE0/s1600/DSCF0968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8PciqyExYOQ/VHTK65LRNJI/AAAAAAAACHU/8ptMvlNlRE0/s1600/DSCF0968.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
And there you have it, a leggings pattern adjusted to fit.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Some more considerations</b><br />
There are still a couple of things to consider. Firstly what if you aren't making leggings but trousers with more details?<br />
So the key here is to adjust in the same manner as above, think about where they will attach to the main pieces of the trousers. so:<br />
Waistbands - cut the length to the same size you used for the width of the trousers.<br />
Pockets - cut to the size you used for width (if you are being fussy you can increase or decrease the length according to the length size you used but I find this isn't usually necessary)<br />
Cuffs - cut to the same size as the width of the fabric<br />
Side panels (stripes) - cut to the size you used for length<br />
<br />
<b>5. Adjusting the ease</b><br />
One final comment I will make is on the built in ease of a pattern. In my experience pdf patterns and european sized patterns are usually pretty good but I have had several issues with commercial paper patterns in the past, where I have found a lot of extra ease built into the pattern. This can give things a large boxy look that isn't flattering and doesn't give a nice finish. If you are at all worried about this then after you have traced the pattern or marked you size then measure the PATTERN PIECES. Take off the seam allowances and work out how large the finished garment will be. I find it helpful to then grab the intended recipient and use a tape measure to see if the amount of ease will be about right. For example you probably don't want about 6" or ease in the hip area of a pair of elastic waist trousers as they will balloon around the bum. If you are in any doubt that a pattern piece look large (or small for that matter) then remeasure, remembering that for stretch fabrics the patterns are sometimes made with negative ease (pattern pieces slightly smaller than body measurements).<br />
So what if the pattern seems huge? Work out roughly how much ease you want and go back to the pattern piece, measure which size that falls on and adjust accordingly. <br />
<br />
That's all there is to it. Following these steps should give you a pair of trousers or leggings that fit as the pattern has intended.<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing and Part 3 (tops) will be up later this week.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There are a lot of reasons that I sew but I would have to say that the biggest one is so that my kids can have clothes that actually fit them. I'm not sure how many people there are out there that are an actual size, but I'm guessing when it really comes down to it not all that many, yet time and again I hear people complaining of ill fitting patterns. They are either too wide or too short or simply don't look like they did in the picture. My general response to this (after an inward sigh) is "Did you go by measurements or make the size your child wears?". Even worse is when those new to sewing will give up altogether after a few bad experiences.<br />
I mean lets face it when buying clothes often vary hugely in size between different brands and in much the same way sizings can vary between different designers and pattern brands. The advantage with RTW is you can try different sizes but you obviously don't want to make different sizes of each pattern, the disadvantage of RTW is that if none of the sizes are quite right you can't do anything about it whereas with patterns you have the power to make almost anything fit!<br />
So what do you need to implement this all consuming super power of the perfect fit? You need a tape measure, a piece of paper and a pen. I know it's all very high tech.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LV1h68YEMeA/VHLwHSHDQsI/AAAAAAAACFo/1baxhAuVPj0/s1600/tapemeasure.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LV1h68YEMeA/VHLwHSHDQsI/AAAAAAAACFo/1baxhAuVPj0/s1600/tapemeasure.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I was possibly very lucky to discover this super power early on in my sewing career partly because my Mum was the costume maker for our local dance school where everything was made to fit precisely, and secondly because I started using patterns for my kids that were european sizings which had me completely baffled to start with. So I'll take you through a bit of a check list of how I work things for general sewing for the small people in our house. (This does apply to myself as well but the measurements I take are slightly different and I prefer to get someone else to take them, plus I don't have to do it quite so often).<br />
<br />
<b>1. When to measure</b><br />
I remeasure the kids each season (can you believe how quickly small people grow) or when I am making a 'special' item or outfit. Also if it has been more than a month since I measured them and I am testing a pattern then I will recheck the measurements appropriate for that pattern. I have a notebook that stays with my sewing things that has their measurements in it which I find really helpful because I'm generally organising patterns/sizings etc once they are asleep at night.<br />
<br />
<b>2. What measurements to take</b><br />
For me it works best to take a full set of measurements each season. I use the Ottobre sizing/measurement chart as a guide and have added a couple of extras to them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iPxWbZ3MbPs/VHLumTYsEFI/AAAAAAAACFc/YCnAXiJPUDM/s1600/ottochart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iPxWbZ3MbPs/VHLumTYsEFI/AAAAAAAACFc/YCnAXiJPUDM/s1600/ottochart.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
This shows the base measurement I take for both my children which are:<br />
Height<br />
Chest<br />
Waist<br />
Hips<br />
Back waist length (distance from most prominent vertebrae to the waist)<br />
Sleeve length<br />
Shoulder width<br />
Outseam length (from waist to the floor/ankle depending on pattern)<br />
Also depending on the season I add in skirt length for my daughter and shorts length for my son which varies on what they want that year (within reason).<br />
I find that this usually covers me for most patterns, every now and then there will be a special measurement required like thigh or ankle circumference, wrist or upper arm circumference or for a hat obviously head circumference.<br />
<br />
<b>3. How to measure</b><br />
Whether you prefer to measure in inches or cms is neither here nor there, just do whatever works. It is important though that the measurements are taken correctly. I grab the kids just out of the bath, throw on some underwear and take their measurements. Don't take measurements over vests/tee shirts etc or they will not be accurate. Make sure the tape measure is taut but not pulling the skin, and that it is sitting flat on the skin and not twisted. A couple of important things to note are that the waist measurement is the 'natural waist' NOT where most kids wear their trousers. I have seen people mention that tying a piece of ribbon around the natural waist can help with the back length measurement but I don't bother. The hips are usually measured around the fullest part of the bottom, and the other one that can be a bit tricky is that the sleeve length is taken down the outside of the arm over a slight bend in the elbow. Finally don't forget to measure your child's height as well :-)<br />
<br />
<b>4. What next</b><br />
Now you are armed with the list that is the key to your superpowers for garment fitting. Take this list and compare it to the pattern you want to make. It is important to compare ALL the measurement given in the measurement table of the pattern, in general designers put them all there for a reason! If it's easier mark or highlight them and don't panic if they cover more than one size (often my kids cover 3 different sizes for different measurements). So if you have ever made something and been disappointed with the fit, when others seemed to have no problems, this may shed some light.<br />
<br />
I'll be back later this week with how to actually use this list to adjust a leggings pattern in part 2 and a top pattern in part 3 :-)<br />
<br />
Happy measuring.<br />

Queue my mind sinning since Mr A has never really been into superheroes so we don't have any costumes on hand. When I asked him who he wanted to go as he thought for a moment and then announced that he wasted to be Dash from The Incredibles because "he can run really fast just like me Mummy".<br />
So off to the computer we go and a quick google images search brings up several great pictures of Dash and several pictures of rubbish baggy store bought costumes. <br />
"No I want one that's tight like the real Dash". <br />
"OK but if I make it tight will you actually wear it?"<br />
"YES"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ojHfL_fwlsg/VG_jN3OEOAI/AAAAAAAACDM/1jXd3EtRVUw/s1600/Dash.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ojHfL_fwlsg/VG_jN3OEOAI/AAAAAAAACDM/1jXd3EtRVUw/s1600/Dash.jpg" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NdD6rRcePmE/VG_jNuAwU2I/AAAAAAAACDI/H-PZDEgoL-4/s1600/The%2BIncredibles%2B-%2BInspiration.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NdD6rRcePmE/VG_jNuAwU2I/AAAAAAAACDI/H-PZDEgoL-4/s1600/The%2BIncredibles%2B-%2BInspiration.jpg" height="215" width="320" /></a></div>
Ok so this doesn't look too hard right? A full length bodysuit with some gloves and some pants to go overtop? <br />
Time to dredge through all those boxes of vintage patterns (I knew I hoarded them for a reason) and success!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dt5IX-Lqa7U/VG_kYGiySeI/AAAAAAAACEI/_0ozB2slv20/s1600/DSCF0956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dt5IX-Lqa7U/VG_kYGiySeI/AAAAAAAACEI/_0ozB2slv20/s1600/DSCF0956.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The 'wetsuit' pattern was perfect except for the stripe that went right down the side. So it was time to get drafting, I measured Mr A and he was a size 5 with 7 length. By the time I'd done that and also accounted for the strip down the side my brain was a bit sore but I was half way there. The bottom portion of the legs being colour blocked in the pattern was perfect for the boot tops and the zip just needed to be down the back instead of the front.<br />
I made up the suit and tried it on to adjust for his overall slim build, then we were on to the finer details. The 'pants' were made from the leotard pattern above which just left the gloves. I bought the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/210481743/plum-princess-purse-and-gloves-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_1">Zuzzy Plum Princess Glove</a> pattern which doubles perfectly as superhero gloves :-)<br />

The Incredibles emblem I appliqued in felt then hand stitched on to account for the stretch in the fabric. Add to that a bit of face paint and some hairspray and we were done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sUrIMMzoEA8/VG_nAMBTKDI/AAAAAAAACEs/LrNDZS8ZPWM/s1600/Dash3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sUrIMMzoEA8/VG_nAMBTKDI/AAAAAAAACEs/LrNDZS8ZPWM/s1600/Dash3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>

Overall this costume was pretty inexpensive as well. Red lycra $5, black lycra from stash, glove pattern $6 (which I will use again), orange felt $2 (other felt from stash), face paint $2 and black shoes to look like boots $8. Most importantly though he loved it and had a fab time at his disco.<br />
Let's finish with an action shot!<br />

I grabbed some Frozen themed cotton lycra knit for Miss M on a destash page. Then of course I needed to find the perfect pattern. I knew I wanted a dress, and I also knew that due to the larger print I wanted the front and back cut in one piece each, rather than a separate bodice and skirt, easy right? Well actually I had to d a bit of searching but then someone pointed me towards the <a href="http://www.sewstraightandgather.com/product/uptowndowntown-dress-pattern-expansion-3/">Uptown/Downtown dress</a> by <a href="http://www.sewstraightandgather.com/">Sew Straight and Gather</a>. I was just getting around to buying it when Terri released the free expansion pack and then I HAD to have it.<br />
So lets start with the original, you get a choice of 3 sleeve options (sleeveless, cap sleeves or 3/4 sleeves), lovely clean lines with just enough twirl to be perfect, a lined bodice (meaning a nice clean neckline) and even the option of lining the sleeves (or a fully reversible option for the sleeveless dress). All this comes in sizes 2-10y as well, I told you it was perfect! <br />
So here is my version of the original Uptown/Downtown dress with cap sleeves, it is so perfect for all those knits that you have with larger prints.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SFCWBwiEPDo/VGjw91VdvsI/AAAAAAAAB_s/rPmocyvcdos/s1600/DSCF0873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SFCWBwiEPDo/VGjw91VdvsI/AAAAAAAAB_s/rPmocyvcdos/s1600/DSCF0873.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jDVf4pEKW_0/VGjw-xIkjwI/AAAAAAAAB_0/xOrVAIrCm3E/s1600/DSCF0875.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jDVf4pEKW_0/VGjw-xIkjwI/AAAAAAAAB_0/xOrVAIrCm3E/s1600/DSCF0875.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I love the nice clean neckline.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And a certain small child was pretty pleased with this one too given her current Frozen obsession :-) I made a size 3 with 4 length and added about 4cm to the hem just to be sure this would last us through summer. The fit is fabulous.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Following the success of this dress I had to jump at the opportunity to join in the blog tour and try out the expansion pack. So what is included int hat you ask? There are 5 expansions including a cowl neck, maxi option, pockets, long sleeves and a tank version. I love them all but since we are heading into summer I decided to try the tank version. I even had the perfect fabric in stash (now that's surprising), again a nice large print cotton/spandex mix that is really shown off beautifully in this pattern.<br />

I hadn't actually done a tank with binding like this before but the instructions were fantastic and I had no issues. I stitched this on with my standard machine and then used my twin needle to give a nice finish. I used a white cotton/lycra for the binding the straps and cut this to the length of the armhole of the original dress and got a perfect length strap - whew. This will depend a lot on the fabric you use for the binding however.<br />

Again this is the size 3 with 4 length (plus 4cm) and the fit is spot on. I'm really pleased with how well teh straps and binding sit as I was a bit worried they might bag a wee bit but no! Woohoo.<br />

Yes you know another leggings pattern to add to the hundreds already available, but NO! This is THE ONLY leggings pattern you will probably ever need. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qvsYnb_Cevk/VGXE1ooO81I/AAAAAAAAB-g/9ORb4PzQ9LA/s1600/skinnylegs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qvsYnb_Cevk/VGXE1ooO81I/AAAAAAAAB-g/9ORb4PzQ9LA/s1600/skinnylegs.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
Do you want to know why? Because in one pattern you get sizes 12m to 14y (that is 15 sizes), 4 different leg lengths and the options of a ruches or plain side panel. But I think most importantly for me is that this pattern is completely customisable. With an extensive measurement chart you can tailor the leggings to fit your child no matter how awkward they are to fit.<br />
Take my child for instance, the last pair of successful leggings I made took about 4 attempts and the morphing of 2 patterns and 3 different sizes. I was asked to pretest these and cut size 3 width with 2 length and they are spot on!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qNUiwl9VixU/VGXFRqSGXgI/AAAAAAAAB-w/NlNtRtrYPi4/s1600/DSCF0679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qNUiwl9VixU/VGXFRqSGXgI/AAAAAAAAB-w/NlNtRtrYPi4/s1600/DSCF0679.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W21yK-2SUhk/VGXFXhy8ziI/AAAAAAAAB-8/5ZMjE3jh1sE/s1600/DSCF0683.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W21yK-2SUhk/VGXFXhy8ziI/AAAAAAAAB-8/5ZMjE3jh1sE/s1600/DSCF0683.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Of course after that I had to have a bit of a play. Luckily we needed new black 3/4 leggings for Miss M's upcoming dancing concert so that was easy, again cut straight to the 3/4 length size and they are perfect (excuse the rubbish photos of this pair).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2aTA-bmEUtM/VGXFM38eQOI/AAAAAAAAB-o/6BhIJrrKwpU/s1600/DSCF0788.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2aTA-bmEUtM/VGXFM38eQOI/AAAAAAAAB-o/6BhIJrrKwpU/s1600/DSCF0788.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Dg0nnLW7m14/VGXFXGkn0gI/AAAAAAAAB-4/CqNmMhwbe9Y/s1600/DSCF0789.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Dg0nnLW7m14/VGXFXGkn0gI/AAAAAAAAB-4/CqNmMhwbe9Y/s1600/DSCF0789.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I had a play with the shorts version with ruches sides (sorry she wanted to pose).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MJB9ur9Gxos/VGXFX-iaJFI/AAAAAAAAB_A/3aeoL-7Ktzw/s1600/IMG_3813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MJB9ur9Gxos/VGXFX-iaJFI/AAAAAAAAB_A/3aeoL-7Ktzw/s1600/IMG_3813.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mIPkxILiE5E/VGXFbzFMAdI/AAAAAAAAB_U/It1EnX4nfNI/s1600/IMG_3814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mIPkxILiE5E/VGXFbzFMAdI/AAAAAAAAB_U/It1EnX4nfNI/s1600/IMG_3814.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ARrSJCK9KnE/VGXFblFiMaI/AAAAAAAAB_Q/YsnBC1CL7G0/s1600/IMG_3816.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ARrSJCK9KnE/VGXFblFiMaI/AAAAAAAAB_Q/YsnBC1CL7G0/s1600/IMG_3816.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another point to note is that the tutorial is excellent. I have made loads of leggings but even if you have never sewn knits you could sew up a pair of these quickly using the very clear tutorial. Yes I have a serger but you don't need one. I must say that with one though I whipped up the black pair in 20 mins including cutting time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So there you go, another fantastic pattern, well done Lydia.</div>

I was in a bit of a knitting funk and may have had one or two skeins of RRHY tucked away so I dragged one out and got to knitting.<br />
The yarn I chose was this one that I actually blogged about <a href="http://www.kiwicraftychemist.blogspot.co.nz/2014/03/girls-night-in-at-movies.html">here</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uU7gvUVfAt4/UyUeUzjJZfI/AAAAAAAABZU/BTm2mIz_XLE/s1600/DSCF9416.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uU7gvUVfAt4/UyUeUzjJZfI/AAAAAAAABZU/BTm2mIz_XLE/s1600/DSCF9416.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a super scrummy merino/cashmere/nylon yarn and I think at the moment, maybe with the exception of merino silk, this is my favourite yarn base. It is lovely and soft to knit up and when you wear it, it feels like a light fluffy hug. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I knew I wanted to make it into something for me, that wasn't socks, so I started trawling ravelry for 4ply cowl patterns and found the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jemma-cowl">Jemma Cowl</a>. This is a lovely simple lace cowl with a picot edge top and bottom and it's shaped simply by changing needle sizes, so no increasing or decreasing required. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm in love with how this knitted up and can see it getting a lot of wear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q7EewqoXKYg/VF1dlxhOozI/AAAAAAAAB-E/JgCruZfW9xE/s1600/DSCF0568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q7EewqoXKYg/VF1dlxhOozI/AAAAAAAAB-E/JgCruZfW9xE/s1600/DSCF0568.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4vmWMPz09To/VF1dkxSyOaI/AAAAAAAAB94/nl47vO0A5Qw/s1600/DSCF0569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4vmWMPz09To/VF1dkxSyOaI/AAAAAAAAB94/nl47vO0A5Qw/s1600/DSCF0569.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sDEMXmUHdrs/VF1dlJXtCsI/AAAAAAAAB98/Oo8GbEYE_AU/s1600/DSCF0570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sDEMXmUHdrs/VF1dlJXtCsI/AAAAAAAAB98/Oo8GbEYE_AU/s1600/DSCF0570.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
And a wee monkey stole it to take some photos ;-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dD1l-eKAfCU/VF1drS_RTCI/AAAAAAAAB-Q/rMHEh4O706s/s1600/DSCF0732.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dD1l-eKAfCU/VF1drS_RTCI/AAAAAAAAB-Q/rMHEh4O706s/s1600/DSCF0732.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think my two favourite things about this pattern are it's simplicity and the finished shape, it sits so nicely on. I would really recommend it to anyone looking for a 4ply cowl pattern with a touch of lace :-)</div>
